The President of the Press Union of Liberia, Charles B. Coffey, Jr. is in London, Great Britain as part of the 2019 Global Media Conference being co-hosted by the United Kingdom and Canada.  Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland and Jeremy Hunt, the UK Foreign Secretary are leading the conference.

Organizers of the event say “it is a major milestone in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office campaign to protect journalists doing their job, and to promote the benefits of a free media worldwide”.

The conference has brought together over 1,000 participants, including government ministers and officials, the diplomatic community, international agencies, journalists, civil society, and academics. It is built to examine the challenges facing media freedom and the opportunities the world can create for a safer environment for journalists. The conference will see countries and international organizations together to take meaningful action to defend media freedom.

It is part of ongoing international campaign to shine global spotlight on media freedom and increase the cost to individuals, states and organizations that are attempting to restrict it.

The first day is focusing on defining the challenges while the second, July 11, 2019 will focus on framing solutions. Commonwealth Foreign Ministers will also meet to discuss media freedom on the margin of the event in London.

Developed democracies are leading campaign for free and independent media throughout the world saying it plays significant roles in protecting human rights and holding the powerful to account.

While, the President of the PUL is out of the country, the Union’s Secretary General, Daniel Nyakonah, Jr is acting as President of the Press Union of Liberia.
